A Strange Kind of Night

June 1st, and it feels like summer is sneaking in.

I’ve been fighting the epic mental battle between toughing it out with my fans, or caving and putting on the air conditioner. Tonight, the fans won, if only for the fact that we’re not 100% sure that the AC is properly insulated in the window.

As I look at the calendar, I realize that two years ago today, I was beginning one of the most life changing experiences I may ever face. June 2nd, 2008, was the Monday that I started teaching at Akehama Elementary School. A school that still easily holds my heart, and I would love to return, if I could. It wasn’t to be though.

My memories of that first month are really scattered. I can remember that first night in Yokohama. I was a mess, literally. I was SO hungry, and I hadn’t slept in days. I wandered around, completely lost for an hour or so, desperately looking for a McDonalds that I had seen on the way to my hotel. And the heat. And the humidity. I anticipated it to be crazy, but I had no idea what I was in for. For the next month, it rained. And rained. And rained. 梅雨, tsuyu, the rainy season, runs through June. Not the greatest first impression, I must say.

And here I am now, two years later. Two rainy seasons later, two summers of oppressive heat later. And I’m finding myself complaining about it being 17 degrees at night, with the humidity hardly noticeable.

I chose the fans, simply to prove to myself that I haven’t gone completely since returning back.

I’ve been adding on to the site here every day. It’s been fun to try putting new plugins on and seeing how things seem. Today, I learnt all about Gravatar. To those of you who are coming from LJ, think of it as your default icon associated with your email address. I quite like the one assigned. I invite you all you make your own icons so when you comment, you get something more individualized than that coloured block.

Another exciting development: I caved and finally got myself a LinkedIn account! I’d really like to get a few people in my network, so if you have an account, let me know, and we can add each other to our networks and give recommendations and stuff!

I love making social networking accounts. ^__^

Completely and totally unrelated to anything, but I was wondering if people might be interested in reading any of my movie reviews on here as well? I tend to go to movies on Tuesday nights, because it’s cheap night, and it might be fun to write something up. If all is quiet tomorrow, I might write up something about Letters to Juliet tomorrow at work. 🙂 Let me know what you think!
